That Time - Samuel Beckett

The text chosen for Typo-photographic redesign.

The Proposal

The project intends to redefine the theatre through the way we engage with in its most fundamental form, the initial script. This exploration of theatre text through design, presents the question whether or not it is possible that Theatricality and Performance may be perceived initially on a printed page rather than on the stage.
By using the conventions of typography and photography, is it possible to evoke the sentiments of the play and the playwright’s intentions and allow audiences to engage with the narrative of the play without seeing its stage reproduction.

The audience is intended to be those who already engage with plays and theatre within a younger demographic roughly aged 18-30. The youth rarely have an pre-conceived notion of the theatre, which often means that their conception of the form and function of theatre can be perceived differently to those of the theatre elite whom have established there own perception of the theatre from years of attending.

The project’s positioning is not intended specifically to address the concept of theatre or even to address a particular issue; it is an artistic endeavour probing audiences to engage with initial text in theatre differently. It is an area not many designers have touched, where they assume the role of dramatist in order to convey the notions and themes expressed in theatre texts through Graphic Design. It is a personal work, an intuitive response to a selected text.

The outcome of the piece is a printed book, the redesign of a play.  The content will be Samuel Beckett’s play “That Time” redesigning the scenes, dialogues and directions of the text, typographically in order that performance may be distilled upon the page. The photographic element that will accompany the words of the page will be a photo series inspired by the play. Beckett’s intention in this play was to evoke a poetic image and to communicate his most intimate and personal intuition of the human condition; I intend to capture that through still photography.

There are both primary and secondary responses that I expect from the user experience. The idealistic projection is that the audiences’ perception of the theatre will be changed, that theatricality may be perceived in a two-dimensional form. However the pragmatic expectation that I have is that they will indeed consider these elements but upon the first experience with the book they will be engaged with it purely on an aesthetic level.
